How to Connect with Your Higher Self (and Why It Matters)
In the wellness space there’s a lot of talk about connecting to your higher self, but what does that mean? And how are we supposed to do it? Is this just another term for spiritual enlightenment? Another concept to overthink while feeling like you’re the only person in the room unable to focus your wandering mind?
I have come to understand the higher self as simply another platform of personal awareness: a launch pad for you to peer into your many beliefs and stories with a curious mind.
You spend most of your day repeating stories in your head. This is often what gets in the way of you living a meaningful life. Connecting with your higher self is when you find the space between the daily mind-chatter and start getting curious about what rings true in your heart.
This thought of connecting to your high self can feel confusing because aren’t you always in contact with source? I believe that we are, but we forget. Your vision becomes like an attic window that hasn’t been cleaned in years, and sometimes you need a reminder to wipe it clear by questioning what you’re doing, how you’re living, and quit expecting the outside world to answer the lingering questions of your soul’s search for meaning.
Connecting with your higher self is discovering who you are without the stories.
Connecting with your higher self is an opportunity to ask meaningful questions and see what comes up…
- How is this behavior helping/hurting me?
- How do I want to show up in the world?
- What kind of relationships am I fostering?
- When do I feel most alive and fulfilled?
- In what direction is this situation moving my life?
- What missions am I dedicated to?
Questions like these help you to circle closer to the age-old question “Who am I?” They help you to wade through what little access you have to this universal pool of wisdom and pull out knowledge from within that successfully guides you on your path.
This concept can be challenging to quantify because we all process information differently so no two paths will be the same. Finding the path that speaks to you is half the battle.
This can feel like a large task, but you know when your heart gravitates towards your truth.
You know when the music moves your soul, when the words of a poem conjure truth from within. You understand the struggle in others because you feel the same emotions in your stillness. You find strength in these truths and can break through unseen barriers because they speak to a higher calling found within.
All of these are tools that help you communicate your truth.
Once you begin to start following these breadcrumbs, you find yourself more in alignment with the life you seek. Below are suggestions you can try to keep an open line of communication with your higher self.
Connect With Nature
Moments in nature awake your soul. The fresh air, the natural lighting, the calmness that surrounds you. It’s almost as if the ancient wisdom of the earth is feeding you its vibration. Whether walking in a park, hiking up a mountain, or getting barefoot in the sand, each step becomes an open communication with the heart.
Find Your Breath
Your breath is how your internal and external worlds have a conversation. It’s a stream of offering out and receiving in information. When your mind is busy running in endless circles, it becomes hard for the mind to focus or relax. This is reflected in how you breathe. Breathwork is a form of meditation that offers you space to quiet the mind by actively controlling your breath. This provides space between your thoughts to connect with your intuition and ultimately your higher self.
Get Creative
Allow yourself space to do something creative. I don’t care if you think you’re good at drawing or singing, or dancing — Just do it. This isn’t about being good, it’s about connecting to the natural intelligence that runs through your veins. It’s an act of surrendering to the experience and discovering what truths pour from it.
Practice Conscious Communication
Becoming mindful of how you speak, both to yourself and others. This helps you to build healthier relationships, it reduces personal conflict, and you might even broaden your vocabulary. When you take time to think about how you show up in communication with yourself and others, it provides more clarity and encourages more active listening. When you speak and listen from a place of awareness, you can respond better because you are in the process of speaking in alignment with your true nature.
These are just some of the ways you can learn to communicate with your higher self. It’s all about self-reflection. Without self-reflection, you never get real internal feedback essential for growth. Getting the practice of stepping back and observing your behaviors and actions is a great form of self-evaluation. I encourage you to get the practice of asking yourself questions that move you toward your higher truth.
- What changes do I need to make?
- What relationships should I be focusing on?
- Where am I running in circles?
- How are my thoughts affecting my life?
- Am I living in alignment with my truth?
Take notes, journal, seek counseling, get a coach; Whatever is going to help you move forward in an aligned way, do that. This is your one precious life. The questions you seek are placed inside your soul for a reason. So the next time your yoga teacher tells you to connect to your higher self, reflect past the daily grind, allow your mind to soften, and trust your truth to unfold.
